This was supposed to be YESTERDAY’S post, but I lost internet connection before I could publish or save it, and I only had a little bit of it left.
Greetings from Hardeeville, South Carolina. Today we journeyed about three-quarters of our way to Orlando, Florida on the first leg of our Great Roberts Cousins Road Trip. Though I cannot say we had a particularly eventful day, we have had fun so far. We spent much of our time today listening to playlists from our respective iPods and then enjoying “New Moon” as a book on tape (and mercilessly making fun of the reading which made many of the male characters sounds quite effeminate!).
We entertained ourselves on the long journey by reading the signs leading to towns in other states (Dumfries and Manassas in what was either Maryland or Virginia, as well as some other ones we found entertaining just because we have our own special brand of sense of humor).
The ride was relatively uneventful, though we did experience a scary moment when we saw a car in front of us completely swerve off of the highway and flip over a few times before landing on its side. We promptly dialed 911, who had received a number of other calls already from other drivers on the road.
We then hit traffic as we entered North Carolina, headed for Patrick’s Cafeteria, a place myth-worthy in our family. Many years ago, Dad, Willa, Lindsay and I stopped there for lunch on another Florida Road Trip, and it has been talked of ever since. Dad has been a few times, and he knew exactly where it was and how we could find it. Well… we found it. The sign and a gravel parking lot, that is! We did not find out what happened, but the building was gone and clearly had been for a while. So much for hole-in-the-wall stops along the way. Apparantely they have given way to the big name chains these days, though we avoid those. It’s a good thing we had snacks in the car
